Commentary

Rubric: “Another fantasia in mode 8, a 4.” A free, through-composed fantasia, beginning with an imitative entry. (= theme 1) for the first 10 bars. There are, thereafter, several superficial attempts to give cohesion, and whilst successful they do not contribute to the creation of a more significant work. In particular, the rhythmic cell M Sm f f M (M= minima, Sm= semiminia, f=fusa) is used towards the end as a rhythmic imitation, in the same way that the rhythm M. Sm M occurs in theme 1 (as does the former motive). The use of Bb throughout much of the work makes it sound more like mode 2, although the character of the opening theme (theme 1) may explain the designation of the work as being in mode 8.
