Commentary

Rubric: “Another fantasia in mode 8, a 4.” Another polythematic imitative fantasia, with substantial free sections, although with a higher percentage of imitation than the two immediately preceding works. It is again a reasonably attractive work, rather directionless. Built with five themes, the fantasia is entirely imitative to bar 25, then increasingly less so until 37. The passage in bars 38-60 is free – and a tends to be dominated by the superius.
Section I (bars 1-16) inc themes 1a, 1b & 2. (2 is variant of 1b).
Section II has theme 3 then motive 4 as part of coda. Theme 5 begins at bar 30 (halfway point).
Many of the thematic statements are varied so themes listed in the thematic databsse are idealised in several instances. The work has some technically demanding left hand passages.
