Commentary

Rubric: “Another fantasia in mode 8, a 4.” This is a polythematic fantasia that can be classified as semi-imitative given its extensive passages of free polyphony. Once again it is quite pleasant yet undistinguished. It is constructed from four themes. It can be described in the following way: Theme 1 is introduced in imitation > free > theme 2 given three times beginning in compass 45 > free > at compass 81 theme 3 heard twice with partial imitation in S > theme 1 > theme 4 > free. The work is built from short phrases, its cohesion is achieved harmonically through harmonic rhythm determined by cadences. Heavy reliance on IV-V-I formulae. The work thus is quite a good example of a loose structure, made to seem adequate through functional harmonic thinking.
