Commentary

Rubric: “Another fantasia in mode 6, a 4.” This work is a polythematic, partially imitative fantasia. It is a pleasant, approachable, and playable work, but somewhat amorphous. Even though its cadences are well enough placed, there is not much melodic structure. It opens with well-constructed imitation of its opening theme. The second section (bar 19ff) introduces a 2nd theme in imitation, but this dissolves into meandering free polyphony a few bars later and continues for another 40 bars without much sense of strong direction. It is reminiscent of a vocal style, however, but without a any narrative program. It serves as a good example of the inadequacy of through-composed vocal style as instrumental idiom without rhetorical narrative.
