Commentary

Rubric: “Fantasía on la sol la mi fa mi. The C clef ins on the third [course] at the third fret.” It is only in the table of contents that Pisador reveals the work to be in the fourth mode. It is a work characteristic of the other ostinato fantasias by Pisador, this time on the theme la sol la mi fa mi [A–G–A–E–F–E), ideal for the fourth mode. It is principally monothematic, and shows all the frustration and lack of direction in Pisador’s original works, despite a pretty beginning and some other attractive passages. The Fanatasia has two main features. (1) The theme is treated as a cantus firmus rather than imitated. [The only imitation is a3 canon at the opening and briefly in compases 74-75 only overlapping, and also compases 79-82].
(2) Most of the thematic statements are in inner voices. Of a total of 26 statements only 13 are in the outermost sounding voices, 7 of these are in the bottom of the texture. Three transpositions found 1st note on A, D, E (D once only with transposed syllables sol fa sol re mi re).
