Commentary

Rubric: “Mode 1 on re mi fa sol mi re. The red ciphers are to be sung. The C clef is on the third [course] at the third fret”. Another monothematic fantasia (with one short sub-theme). The indication of mode relates firstly to the theme, as well as melodic range of the soprano voice, but the tonality is more like a modern A minor tonality than mode 1 transposed to A. The treatment of the theme is almost entirely imitative, and there are some good examples of competent 3 part and 4 part canonic writing, even if they suffer from being over-written and consequently too dense. (bars 28-34; 40-42). They also suffer from lack of harmonic direction. A cadential sub-theme 2 enters in bar 20 towards the cadence at bar 23 (exactly the mid-point) followed by paring down of the texture. Printing errors, and usual weaknesses spoil the work. The theme usually appears in transposed from starting on A.
