Commentary

Rubric: Fantasia in mode 8 on sol mi fa sol mi re. The C clef is located on the third [course] at the third fret.” Another monothematic fantasia that is quite representative of Pisador’s cantus firmus fantasias. It is constructed from quite competently realised ideas, including some very beautiful passages. The overall formal shape is reasonable: there is good use of duos for contrast, and full a4 textures. There is some awkward writing in patches [e.g. bars 5-6] (= halved bars in modern edition). Pisador gets very good mileage from his theme, and there are many partial statements – thus the descending 3rd gains considerable prominence. Particularly skilful are the interlocking canons of the theme, and the stretto a3 (bars 25-29) is a beautiful passage and example. There is much more imitative use of the theme than cantus firmus use.
