One of the few surviving Spanish examples of a basse dance. Narváez gives no indication of the identity of the tenor melody, presumably pre-existing. Ward confirms that it is not related to “La Spagna” but that it is closely related to the tenor used by Valderrábano in his “Baxa” for two vihuelas. The melody below is reconstructed by Ward from these two versions (ward1953, 146). The notes in brackets are not in the Narváez version.

The Pedrell edition in CMPE III is quite similar to the style of Morphy’s transcriptions.

Narváez’s setting was copied under the title “the base of spayne” in the English manuscript now known as the Braye Lute Book (olim Osborne Lute MS).
