Commentary

Polythematic imitative fantasia in 7 sections, showing a wide range of polyphonic techniques, and making it a work of exceptional ingenuity within restricted stylistic boundaries. Unusual features: 3/1 section at end; no repetitions; section I only a duo; non-imitative opening; harmonic sequence of section III.
Themes 2+5 related. Theme 2 = Narváez’s common theme.
Themes 2, 3, 4 are compact, and are really nothing more than cadential formulae in an extended function. In several sections inc. I & VI, Narváez develops his idea slowly instead of giving it away first.
