Commentary

This fantasia in mode 8 is partly imitative, part freely composed of 95 compases. It opens with 4 part imitation of 1 (1-15) then bridge (homophony) leads to 2nd style from c. 19, in which duos proceed with upper voice forming Semibreve (cantus firmus?) melody over glossed lower. 4 phrases, no repetition to 40. Register contrasts for each phrase --> then one phrase a4 of Semibreve chords with Seminima discant giving way to free polyphony in cadentially defined phrases until 75. Then theme 2 introduced and imitated loosely until 89. Then follows appended coda to 95 ending with plagal IV – I cadence.

Venegas de Henestrosa reworked this fantasia. See 1557/2, no. 72 [Anglés edition, p. 106-8, Fantasia XVIII] , also including material from Tiento 8 (Mu046)
