Another of the fantasias at the beginning of the Tres Libros that serve a partially didactic function of incorporating passages using “redobles”. The passages are marked in the tablature with “dedi” and “dosde” to indicate whether they should be played with alternating fingers or with the finger tip used as a plectru,m (dedillo). Mudarra indicates a medium tempo (C).
The work begins and ends with imitation, and has a long middle section which is based on redobles, from which a number of rhythmically similar ascending and descending scalic motives are found. The work is almost perfectly symmetrical looked at as a whole. The redoble patterns parallel each other in terms of range, tessitura, and length. The mid-section breaks up into cadentially defined phrases. The redoble themes/motives are not catalogued but their similarities can easily be traced.
