Commentary

Rubric: “this villancico that follows is the style that is here sounding: the singer can ornament and the vihuela has to go very slowly.”

This is another plain chordal setting, homophonic, allowing for performance flexibility.

In his Cancionero, Pedrell claims this song to be “Muy popular y muy imitada por poetas y músicos” [very popular and imitated by poets and musicians] and lists two other versions by Cristóbal de Castillejo and Alonso de Alcaudete, “algo picante” [somewhat saucy] (pedrell1918, III, 30). He transcribes (pedrell1918, III, 96) another anonymous setting in three voices from the CMP (Barbieri, 209).

Song Text

Aquel caballero, madre,
que de mí se enamaró
pena él y muero yo.

Madre, aquel caballero
que va herido de amores,
también siento sus dolores
porque dellas mismas muero;

su amor tan verdadero
merece que diga yo:
pena él y muero yo.
