Commentary

The rubric indicates that “this fantasia that follows goes according to the seventh and eighth modes, and for this reason we say it is mixed, and it has to played neither too fast nor too slowly.” It is a polythematic fantasia, an attractive work that fits into characteristic type of Milán’s sectional pattern. Changes in textural and rhythmic criteria more than anything else determine the nature of the sections. It uses the usual large scale formal pattern: an opening with imitation, a final section that is repetition in full, and separated by sections defined by short motives.
