Commentary

For this fantasia, Milán is brief: “...and this fantasia that follow is in the seventh mode and should be played quite quickly”.

It is another polythematic fantasia. It is imitative, but of a far different order to earlier works. It comprises more thematic repetition in network form than the motivic imitation which usually typifies his work. It opens with theme 1 thrice, after its original position it is repeated an 8va lower and then a 4th below the original. Tonality is more important in this piece. There is substantial variation or repetitions of themes 2+3. With theme 2, variation is for harmonic shift, in theme 3 there is an apparent desire completely to deviate. Section II includes themes 4, 5, 6 in ¢3 metre, all similarly treated, but quite uniform, then at change back to ¢. Theme 7 is an intensely imitated three note motive to K. Section III begins with theme 8, with a varied repeatcontinuing as free polyphony free with 2 phrases each repeated. The whole section is then repeated, and K added.

Themes of II are variant of those in I but in triple metre
1 aprox equal 4 & 5
2 aprox equal 6
Same function as well as shape.
Unique case – shows careful form moulding.
