Commentary

Introductiory rubric: “This fantasia that follows is in the sixth [mode] and has to have the beat quite fast. I have already said that only the sixthe mode works well in this position because for the fifth it doesn’t have the right range”. This is because the bass voice has an F-f range as it is a authentic mode voice in mode 6 and the piece is cast with the final on VI/1.

The work is in the Polythematic imitative style. The A-tuning gives mode in Bb (In E it would be untransposed). Compared to the two previous works, it reinforces the idea that content can imply tempo. The construction is a little atypical. Section I is very long. It contains freer sections also, but no metre changes. The work, although different, does correspond to basic Milán formulae of: Imit >> freer >> motivic with sectional repetition. Free material, or less significant imit motives introduced in K sections.
