Commentary

The introductory rubric states: “This following fantasia is in the sixth mode and has to be played with a beating beat, that is, fast” the sixth mode is better played in this position than the fifth, because it lacks an ambitus.” This appears to refer to tranposition of the mode to B-flat on an A instrument, or said another way as though it were a vihuela in E.

The work is a polythematic imitative, similar to the preceding fantasias in formal construction, yet significantly, different outwardly because of its tempo. It is a good comparative work for this reason. It has fewer musical events, and sparser texture to allow playing at a faster speed. Clear sectional definition.
