Commentary

Rubric: “The following fantasia is set using the third and fourth modes, and because it draws from them both and mixes them, it will be called mixed, and it has to be played neither very fast nor very slow.”

Polythematic imitative fantasia. Long, involved, technically demanding. 222 compases. *A tuning gives G final; should perhaps be F# tuning. Typical Milán work. Strongly personal. Consistent mood. Very effective. Many themes make only minor appearances. Contrasts obvious and more obscure / involved sections. Thematic links between several themes and motives. Serious work. Consistent formal pattern to other works: straight-forward imitation >> more complex middle (less consistent) >> obvious motivic imitation with block repetition >> homophonic concluding coda. Rhythm, particularly at the smallest level of great unifying importance in redoble motives throughout work.
