“This following Fantasia is in the second mode and has to be played with a steady beat so that it is neither too slow nore too fast”. The work ends up quite differently to how it begins. It is a great contrast to the tight work which precedes it. It is loosely a polythematic imitative work, but distinguishes itself by the prominence of short “redoble” motives in the early part of the work, the reappearance of a few little motives and most importantly the large amount of very free writing. It also has some remarkably modern and ‘folksy’ sounding harmonic progressions. Note major-minor change bar 22ff.
