Commentary

The fifth of Fuenllana’s Fantasias for four-course vihuela. A brief polythematic imitative fantasia of 72 compases. 4th course if C, as if the 5th course of a vihuela in G. The least typical of the guitar fantasias. No full exposition of theme 1. Short episodes of related themes.

Sectional division:
I (1-15) Theme 1 is given T – B with theme 2 occurring in S between these two entries. K at 15.
II (15-28) Theme 2b imit then shorter form that is the next motive theme 2. Further entries to K at 28.
III (29-49)Imit of theme 3 whose tail is theme 2, given twice, then twice 3 head with different tail. K at 40. Theme 4 then appears as a stretto – like imitation to K at 49.
IV (49-72) This final section then reverts to theme 2, imits until end over.
The thematic form of the work is thus a type of ternary, with theme 1 being a “false alarm” to theme 2 which assumes much more structural prominence.
