The fourth of Fuenllana’s Fantasias for four-course vihuela. A brief polythematic imitative fantasia of 67 compases, and a fine work. 4th course if G, as if the 5th course of a vihuela in D.
Sectional division:
I (1-33) long section on broad theme 1. S/T – B exposition, then T – B with much interest above, then free from 23.
II (33 – 67) expo of 2 I same as 1 S/T – B, but theme has more spring. Theme modified to form 3 tightly imitated finishing with intensifying redobles >> free with motivic 4 giving some unity.
Fine example of a symmetrical proportional design of 2 x 33 semibreves, and of thematic transformation.
Mixed mode: range of S = 5th mode, cadences are definitely 6th because of large number on A.
