The first of Fuenllana’s Fantasias for four-course vihuela. Polythematic imitative, longer work 134 compases. Tuning is as if the middle four courses of a vihuela in E. Quite difficult to play. As magnificent as the early long six-course works. Divides into six episodes which vary between canonic imitation and (quasi-) ostinato technique. Major structural division at ½ way mark.

I (1-25) theme 1 imit then free.
II (24-48) theme 2 imit – tighter.
III (47-69) theme 3 suelto (quasi-ostinato) imitation.
IV (69-79) theme 4 imit + free.
V (79-97) theme 5 ostinato, descend sequence in B. with motive 6 in A + K.
VI (97-134) ascending theme head 7 loosely uniting a freeish section. 7 diminished near end.
