Commentary

The fourth of Fuenllana’s Fantasias for five-course vihuela. It is composed as a brief polythematic imitative work of 81 compases. It is interesting andvaried, more difficult to sectionalize.
I. (1-38) 4 voices exposition of 1 in pseudo A/S – B/T style. Until 17 then freer use of motive of theme until 38. Varied theme – distinct head + tail units.
II. (38-70) Theme 2, very narrow range of a 3rd, cadential type theme in rather free setting of short cadentially defined phrases. Free from 53 onwards, with a change of direction upwards at 63 gathering intensity for K.
III. (70-81) A short section that is virtually a coda to the preceding two. Theme 3 (descend) in middle voice sequence with S descend 3rds in outer voices in parallel 10ths + K.
Lovely piece. Jacob transcribes in G with f# that is D tuning. Seems to me more mode 6 than 8. Section I has motivic development more typical of later composers, almost reminiscent of Bach.
