Commentary

Intabulation by Fuenllana of a villancico by Francisco Guerrero setting an anonymous text. Fuenllana’s intabulation is the only extant version of the music. Other settings of the poem survive, one by Juan Vázquez (1560)—edited in vasquez1946, pp. 36,137—and another anonyomous one in a manuscript in the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid (E-Mn MC/3876 pp. 34-35). The poem is also inculded in the Cancionero sevillano in New York (frenk1996). In the table of contents of Orphenica Lyra, the incipt “torna Mingo” is given, but the tablature begins with the second verse of the poem “¡Guarda fuera!. Ruiz reports that two of the surviving copies (Granada and Barcelona) have the first verse added by hand: “Torna Mingo, a enamorarte”.
