This setting places the villancico tune of presumably popular origin in the tenor, as a cantus firmus, prnted in red ciphers The remaining three voices build a counterpoint out of motives from the melody. The work was evidently well considered in its own time, at least by its author who included it in both his published anthologies of 1551 and 1560. Another three voice setting is in the Turin manuscript (Turín, Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria R.1–14, nº 19; edited Miguel Querol Gavaldá. Cancionero musical de Turín: transcripción y estudio. Madrid: Sociedad Española de Musicología, 1989.)
De los álamos vengo, madre
de ver cómo los menea el ayre.
De los álamos de Sevilla
De ver a mi linda amiga
de ver cómo los menea el ayre.
From the poplars I come, mother
from seeing how they sway in the breeze.
From the poplars of Seville,
From seeing my fair love,
from seeing how they sway in the breeze.
