Commentary

Described by Fuenllana as a “soneto” the text of this work does not correspond to the poetic structure of a sonnet and therefore should be understood more along the lines of a villanesca, a generic Spanish term for madrigal. No vocal original survives, but the work was also intabulated by Vincenzo Galilei in Fronimo (1568/2, no 3, p. 13, and 1584/5, no 7, fol. 23.). The bass voice of the original polyphony is printed in red ciphers so it can be sung. The text is placed below the tablature.

Song Text

alcance a conocer
mas auentajada que otra sculptura.
