Commentary

Intabulation of a setting by Pedro Guerrero of a renowned passage from the Egloga primera by Garcilaso de la Vega. This is one of Garcilaso’s most celebrated poems. The soprano voice [tiple] is printed in red notes for singing. The vocal model is preserved in the Cancionero de Medinaceli, E-Mb6829, although the Medinaceli MS does not have Fuenllana’s 2ª pars. The tenor voice of another setting a 5 by Julio Severino is in the MS Valladolid 255 (E-Vc).

Song Text

Oh, harder than marble to my complaints
and to the burning fire in which I burn,
more icy than the snow, Galatea!
I am dying, and yet I fear life,
and for good reason since you leave me,
for without you what is life for?
I am ashamed that anyone
should see me in such a state,
abandoned by you
and fleeing now even from myself.
Do you disdain to have dominion of the soul
where you always resided,
unable to take leave for a single hour?
Flow without pain, flow my tears.
