Commentary
Literal intabulation of a five-voice setting by Denis Brumen, mistakenly attributed by Fuenllana to Verdelot. The bass voice is printed in red ciphers to be sung. There has been some confusion about the authorship of this work that seems to originate with Eitner. The source clearly identifies the composer as Denis Brumen, not Denis Briant even though RISM (4/08/2019) still lists the author as Briant, although RISM lists this work as being by Briant. The text is by Pietro Barignano (ca.1490-ca.1550). Fuenllana’s setting omits the third verse of the opening quatrain of the poem, although the music is complete. The RISM ID for the work is: 00000993102202. The source is: RISM ID 00000993104334 (RISM1542/16). It is on p. 16 of the print. The Munich copy (D-Mbs 4 Mus.pr. 155) is available online. An earlier four-voice setting of the same text by Hieronymo Lauro (fl. 1514-1517) is in Petrucci’s Frottole libro undecimo: Fossombrone, 1514, RISM 1514/2.
