Commentary

First of the series of fabordon settings by Francisco Guerrero. The rubric indicates “Here follow the eight modes in fabordon, composed by Francisco Guerrero, and also the eighth irregular [mode]”. Of this set, Ruiz Jimenez comments that his analysis of the important section of psalms that begins E-GRmf 975 (Biblioteca Manuel de Falla in Granada allowed him to locate the complete versions of six of them, as well as the separate five-voice “Sicut erat”, all of them—with the exception of the Dixit Dominus in mode 1—are anonymous in the Granada manuscript.

This first one in mode 1 uses Psalm 109 (110) “Dixit Dominus domino meo”. Fuenllana incorporates verses 2 (Donec ponam) and 4 (Tecum principium). These are variants of the same paslam headed “de Guerrero” in E-GRmf 975, fols. 5v-6r. In this source there are six verses (probably the even ones 2, 4, 6, 8) plus the doxology (ruiz2022).
