Commentary

This composition is an intabulation of the three-voiced “Benedictus” from Morales “Missa Mille regretz”, based on Josquin’s chanson. The composition is a literal intabulation with very little added material, other than a few brief decorations. Concerning the vocal sources see Anglés, in the Morales collected edition and the works by Pogue, Stevenson, Schöner and Alern. Schöner’s suggestion (p. 135) that the most likely source for Fuenllana’s model is Morales first book of motets (RISM M3580) of 1544 is borne out by the comparison of tablature and source.
