Commentary

Polythematic, imitative fantasia. Very similar formally to fu089 and fu090, yet individual in thematic shape, sound & process. It is a short work of 70 compases; binary division at c.33.
• I (1-32)– theme 1 S/T – A/B @ 1xS & at the 8va, with S or A?/T pair beginning on F, and 2nd pair on C. Triadic theme structure. Single entries followed by free material making good use of theme head entries. Opening expands the texture through voice pairs, followed by a free section that is a series of phrases a2 & a3.
• II (33-70) – Rhythmically curious theme 2 treated as imitation suelta – non-canonic imitation with other voices free. Fuller texture than I. The free section at the end is highly motivic and rhythmically vital.

These brief works display little tonal variety, nor do they reveal quite the expansiveness of the larger works. The tail of both themes is the same - unity despite the difference in the theme head.
