The second of the fantasias of the “libro quarto” is on fol. 99 but is misfoliated as fol. 119, fol. cxix. It is another polythematic fantasia, imitative, sectional by themes. Marked with D (difficult). It has 4 themes, each with a section of its own within the continuous motion of the work. Notable is the pattern of progressively more succinct themes, and stricter treatment of themes 2 + 3, with 4 being motivic & IV thus seeming definitely like a post – argument cadential section.
Between sections I & II there is a bridge which foreshadows what is to come, and summarises what has been stated already. The general spaciousness of section I is maintained in II & III by gradually freeing up the imitative strictness. Duos form the basis of the points of imitation, but freer thematic entries “sueltos” occur in II & III. Section IV is strongly rhythmic on the small scale.
Theme 1 is very individual. 2 + 3 are more archetypal.
