Commentary

The opening work of the Libro quarto of Orphenica Lyra. It is the second part of the “Gloria” from Josquin’s “Missa La sol fa re ut”, that is, from the part beginning “Qui tollis”. In four voices, the tenor is indicated in red ciphers.

Josquin’s “Missa La sol fa re mi” was first published in Petrucci’s first book of masses in 1502. It is one of his most famous masses, and one of the earliest and most renowned examples of the soggetto cavato technique – the syllables derived from the phrase "Lascia fare mi" (Italian: "leave me alone").
