Commentary

Fuenllana attributes this work to Gombert, but it is a contrafactum of Josquin’s chanson Je ne me puis tenir d’aimer (Josquin, Wereldlijke Werken, no 31). The same music is found in Mudarra with the text Respice in me deus (Mu051) and also attributed to Gombert. A polyphonic setting of this work headed Lauda Sion is found in Archivo Falla 975 (see Chrisotoforidis and Ruiz 1993, 1994). Blackburn 1976 gives the stemma, sources and a transcription of the chanson. The same music is found in 1572 Mellange de Chansons. Ed. by Charles Jacobs. London: University Park, The Pensylvania State University Press, 1982. (nº 57, 204-8). The Josquin score is available online at http://conquest.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/8/8f/IMSLP559233-PMLP901097-31._Je_ne_me_puis_tenir_d_aimer.pdf (accessed 18/06/2019)
