Commentary

Polythematic imitative fantasia of 109 compases, therefore of medium length. It is constructed in3 sections, although I & II make one unit:
I (1-26) theme 1 A/S – B/T – A/S – free – T/S – K
II (24-44) theme 2 interlocks with last statement of 1. Cadential type motive – theme B – A/T – S > Free to K.
III (44-109) theme 3 stretto imitations and sequences of favorite descending motive, beginning as T/B – S/A pairs working intensely for long time inc. parallel 10ths from 65, then long free section with a couple of references to the theme. Free section proportionate to intensity of dense thematic imitations > K. Very idiomatic section. Mode transposed to G.

This fantasia was reprinted in Denss Florilegium as Fantasia prima, fol. 62v, transcribed into French tablature
