Commentary

Fuenllana’s intabulation of the four-voice “Benedictus” movement of Morales Missa L;homme armé. In this particular setting, the “Benedictus” is a movement in its own right. The alto voice is based on five repetitions of an ostinato cantus firmus in long notes: e-f-e-d-c-b (shown in red ciphers) of 18 tablature measures. Schöner (135) suggests that the 1544 Roiman edition (RISM M3582) is the most likely source of model.
