Commentary

Polythematic imitative fantasia of short/medium length (119 compases). It seeems to be in mode 1, with a final cadence on the dominant. It contains some interesting constructional individuality within its four sections.
I (1-28) opens regularly, then theme 1 dissipates into skeletal form and interest is transferred to motivic theme 2. Then skeletal 1b returns in the pre-cadential approach.
II (28-50) theme 3 starts as a continuation of the previous section and completes gestalt of 1. Impetus is achieved through homophonic chords although texture is voice pairs. – Close harmonic intervals & unbroken rhythm helps. Passing notes near K.
III (50-75) Theme 4 is an imitative theme head with a weak beat tied aver the barline as its second note. Obscures itself. Mysterious contrast to overt II. Variety of tails.
IV (75-119) Theme 5 – begins with tied note over barline, and more emphasis falling on its tail which resembles that of 3. Voice pairs > spasmodic imitative appearances with free material between. Concludes with distinct coda.

Theme 1 of work is a condensed version of the opening theme of the motet with which it is paired.
