Polythematic imitative fantasia. A long and substantial work of 215 compases, although not extremely difficult for performance. It is an interesting & enjoyable work. Its opening theme together with an internal section in 3/2 metre relate it to the Lhéritier motet that it follows.
The work divides into VII sections. They are all imitative, each on a new theme, except VII which, in 3/2, introduces no new theme. Within the work there are several theme types: voice pairs, canonic non-paired. With free contrapuntal extensions of some length & beauty.
I (theme 1) 1-45; II (theme 2), 46-80; III (theme 3), 80-120, IV (theme 4), 120-141; V (theme 5) 121-185; VI (theme 6) 185-200; VII (200-215). Variety of themes – length rhythm as well as thematic process.
The transcription in Jacobs’ edition would have made more sense for a vihuela in G rather than a vihuela in A.
