Commentary

This is the first fantasia of libro II. A polythematic Ricercar in seven structural sections. Formal cohesiveness evident through repeated use of some thematic material in a number of sections. Also there are textures which are repeated but with different material. The work features quite marked use of motivic material in a directed manner of growth. The work has a tripartite scheme ABA (similar to Ward’s prototype model) where A1= I, II, III; A2 = VI, VII although A2<A1, both have same program type, whereas B is a relative low point. Notice the amount of accompanied melody (IV-V-VI). IV & V = B share the same curve V being a type of codetta. A simpler view would be to have 2 sections 1-89 + 89-188, although this makes less sense in the perspective of process through time. This also gives the first view some room for doubt. Treatment of dissonances is so powerful that it invites comparison between Fuenllana and Bach.
