Commentary

Intabulation of a four-voice Villanesca found in the Cancionero de Medinaceli and the single tiple part in Galdiano 681 that corresponds to the 2º tiple of Medinaceli. The work is unattributed in Medinaceli, but Trend, in his “Catalogue of the Music in the Biblioteca Medinaceli”, Revue Hispanique 71 (1927), p 525, attributed it to Villalar, probably on the basis of Daza’s intabulation. It was reprinted “a lo divino” as “Esclarecida Madre” by Soto de Langa (1583), and is also included by F. Guerrero in his Canciones y Villanescas Espirituales (1589) converted “a lo divino” to “Esclarecida Madre”. It is therefore most likely to be by Guerrero. For more, see A. Esclaracida Juana, el que se atreve
a lebantar los ojos y mirarte
es como el que procura
mirar el solo en su altura,
que todos los estremos de velleza
puso en tu rostro la naturaleza,
y estando amor en tus serenos ojos
enriqueze y aumenta sus despojos.

Noble Juana, whosoever dare
raise his eyes to behold you
is the same as he who pretends
to gaze upon the sun at its zenith,
that all the extremes of beauty
were placed on your countenance by Nature
and being there love residing in your serene eyes,
increases and enriches their spoils.
