A literal intabulation of Richarfort’s renowned motet. The bass voice is singled out for the vihuelist to sing should he wish. I have giiven the mode as mode 5, transposed to C, although Lockwood describes as Ionian, but no vihuelist expresses his musical ideas in anything other than the classic eight-mode system. H.M.Brown,“Richafort” in New Grove describes “Quem dicunt homines” as "a model of formal clarity".
The text is a paraphrase of Matthew 16: 13-16.
The copy used by Daza as the model for his intabultation has not been established with complete certainty, but the 1532 edition of “Motteti del fiore” by Jacques Moderne is the most likely candidate. In Lockwood’s edition of the Richafort motet (lockwoodQUEM), the list of sources includes 8 prints and 11 manuscripts, signifying a broad transmission. The prints are (by RISM no): 1532/10, 1538/7, 1538/8, 1539/12, 1545/4, 1553/2, 1555 Richafort motets, 1564/6. The MSS are from Cambrai, Leiden, Madrid, Padua, Regensburg, Rome, St Gallen, Toledo, Treviso and Venice. The presence of two Spanish copies is possibly significant, Medinaceli 607, no 17; Tioledo Bibl. Capit. MS B, mus. 10, fol. 34ff.). The Lockwood edition is based on the Roman MS Bibl. Vaticana, Cap Sist. MS46, fol. 89ff.
Quem dicunt homines este filium hominis
respondens Petrus dixit tu es filius Dei vivi
respondet Jesus beatus es Simon petre quia caro et sanguis non rebelavit tibi sed pater meus qui est in caelis,
et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus et super hanc petram edificabo ecclesiam meam. Alleluia.
Who do the men say the Son of Man is?
Peter answered and said: “Thou art the Son of the living God.”
Jesus replied “Blessed are you Simon Peter because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church.” Alleluia.
