Commentary

Intabulation for two vihuelas tuned to at the minor third of a five-voice motet by Morales, the lower in B and the higher in D. Only the Prima pars is intabulated. Concerning the vocal model, see Morales, Opera Omnia, ed Anglés, vol. II (Rome, 1953), Texto, 36; and Schöner (1999, 216).
The rubrics at the beginning of the tablature are as follows: [vihuela 1]: Morales. Large Vihuela. This tuning is like the previous one,and every six compases in this vihuela part you will seen some dots in the tablature which is the cantus firmus upon which this motet is made. Second grade. [vihuela 2]: This is the small vihuela, and has to be played according to the tempo. First grade.” The notes corresponding to the cantus firmus are printed in red in the transcription by Gil. It comprises a short phrase G–A–F–E–F–G (and transposed to D–E–C–B–C–D) repeated in alternation throughout the composition. The vocal model is listed in two Spanish manuscripts by Anglés, and in a further six in RISM (12/08/2022), but no printed sources have been located.
