Commentary

Narváez, Libro 3. Intabulation of a chanson attributed widely to Gombert, but under some question. First published in1534 by Attaingnant, reprinted in 1537 but it is unlikely that Narváez would have had access to the 1537 reprint at the time of preparing his vihuela book. Fink finds that Narváez’s treatment is a straight-forward intabulation with melodies modified slightly, harmonic voicings often simplified, and a slight truncation toward the end (74 measures into 64). There has been some discussion of possible authorship by Crecquillon. See New Grove 2, “Gombert, Nicolas: Works, Chansons,” by George Nugent and Eric Jas.
