Commentary

This piece is a faithful intabulation of the Sanctus of Josquin’s Missa Hercules Dux Ferrariae, although mistakenly identified as being from the Missa Faysan regretz in the header. The correct title is given in the Table of Contents of Libro 3. The erroneou heading applies to Na017.

The Mass is one of Josquin’s most celebrated cantus firmus masses, dedicated to Duke Ercole d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, and based on a soggetto cavato, heard repeatedly through the music. The vocal model dates presumably from 1503 or 1504, although it could be older. Details of the music are discussed extensively by Bevilacqua (bevilacqua2004, 65-78).
