Commentary

Villancico setting of an otherwise unknown text. It has a very distinctive melody and shows Mudarra at his best as a song writer. It is marked by a long instrumental imitative introduction using the opening theme of the song. It is set in classic villancico style: estribillo (1-51), copla (52-69), and although not indicated in any way, the estribillo should be repeated.
Pujol’s commentary sums up the character of the song admirably: “Anonymous, picaresque, with an intense popular flavour. The sash of Isabel, a girl of ostentatious beauty and gallant haughtiness, floats on the water, the supposed defeat of her contemptuous arrogance for the sake of love. The musical commentary, agile in rhythm and graceful in line, underlines the text with felicitous rapport. A long instrumental period of eighteen bars precedes the song, of inspired freshness, whose declamation gives rise to unexpected breaks in the rhythm and subtle dissonances in the clash of some voices that increase the appeal of its character, similar to that of certain popular Castilian and Asturian songs that are still sung today.” (Pujol1949, 86)
