Commentary

This is Mudarra’s intabulation of Willaert’s four-voice motet “Pater noster - Ave Maria” the Lord’s Prayer. Only the first part is intabulated. The tenor voice of the vocal model is the voice to be sung. The motet was first printed in 1532 by Moderne in Motetti del fiore.

See va081 for another 6 voice setting of the same text, for two vihuelas. See also the second part of this motet as “Ave Maria” in Fuenllana (fu037) and Pisador (pi070).

Song Text

Pater noster qui es in celis;
sanctificetur nomen tuum,
adveniat regnum tuum;
fiat voluntas tua,
sicut in caelo et in terra.
Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie
et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut
et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris;
et ne nos inducas in tentationem,
sed libera nos a malo.
Amen.
