Commentary

A polythematic, partly imitative fantasia, but mostly free polyphony. The waywardness of polyphony matches the mood of the fourth mode. It could be described as languid. Proceeds without break. Theme 1 is once stated incipit. Followed from 8-28 with imitations of motivic theme 2. Remainder of work is free with varied texture in phrases which explore the harmonic area. Textures from homophonic to redoble. Dissonance enhances work esp. final cadence at 85-87. Harmonic progress, registration, texture control musical drama.

Venegas de Henestrosa reworked this fantasia. See 1557/2, no. 61 [Anglés edition, p. 86-7, Fantasia VII]
