Commentary

Rubric: “This sonnet that follows, the way in wihcih it is to be played is with the singer singing very plain and the vihuela has to go somewhat fast.

The music is in mode 7, transposed a 4th on a vihuela in A, it is untransposed in D tuning.

The text is the opening verses of a longer poem Petrarch from the Canzoniere (Rerum vulgarum fragmenta). Numerous settings of the text are found in Italian madrigal collections throughout the sixteenth century.
