Author’s abstract: “In this article, an approach to the musical form Ricercare is made, arisen from the extemporizations for dances at the beginning of the 16th century. Its most representative sources and authors have been studied, within the variety of typologies that they contributed all along the century.”
An article based on many false conceptions, but looking for a way of recognising the earliest ricercare as improvisations based on material found in dance music. The primary evidence is drawn from the Petrucci lute books. Despite it numerous idiosyncratic and baseless arguments, it does serve to show clear similarities in the harmonic and melodic language of lutenists of the time, whether they were writing ricercars or dances.
