From Seville to New Spain. The turns of the Marian cult in the augustinian conventof San Juan Bautista Tiripetío, Michoacán, Mexico.
Abstract:
Devotion to the Mother of God was established very early in New Spain, and perhaps one of the earliest ones was that of saint Mary the Ancient of Seville. One of them was in the Augustinian convent of San Juan Bautista Tiripetío since 1548, but unfortunately, the painting was destroyed by a fire in 1640. A century later, the friars would place a canvas of the virgin on an altar, different from the Sevillian one, the one they would call Virgen de los Pródigos. This is the story of how the Marian cult was transformed and how it survives to this day.
The article confirms the Iberian use of vihuelas in Mexico in Corpus processions. It does not give any significant details.
