Pedro Menéndez de Avilés established St Augustine in 1565. Within a year, he embarked on a journey to make contact with the powerful Indian chiefs of Sth Florida. These interactions lasted three years, the best narrative account is the lengthy Memorial of Gonzalo Solís de Merás, the text edited here.
